The Move

Summer 2012 saw a lot of changes both personally and professionally. The two of which became linked as the summer progressed.

I had just started a wonderful job with a great San Luis Obispo company. SLO was my home, and I felt incredibly lucky for the opportunity. Yet…I was distracted. There was a bit of family turmoil back where I’m originally from, Walnut Creek, CA. It got to a point where I knew I had to make a change. So I made the decision to leave the job I was so excited about, and their understanding helped in a huge way. After informing my boss of my decision and need, I went home packed my things and moved that night.

So there I was. Back in Walnut Creek…and I thought, “What on earth am I going to do?” I knew what I was interested in, but I didn’t have a lot of the experience to back it up with the insanely tough Bay Area job market.

I took some time to get settled in, and also made sure to rest. I had been going nonstop for 6 years at that point with no vacation. So I took that time to try and rest, which felt incredible.

Early in the Fall, my Dad and I were at Stadium Pub downtown to catch a San Francisco Giants playoff game. Since we made sure to be there early and get a table, we had time to sit and have a rare conversation. It was then that I informed him I was interested in doing real estate (which he does). He informed me of the steps I would need to take, and that I could join his team. We said “let’s do real estate," and cheered our beer bottles together right before first pitch.

My move back to the first town I lived in was complete. I decided on a path that would give me a world of real-life experience, and I got to work with my Father when I didn’t get to spend much time with him growing up.

The rest of 2012 was spent doing the real estate practices and principles courses and applying to take the test. I spent a great deal of time shadowing my Father’s work, and learning what I would need to do to build a successful business.
